Safety First! Novel therapeutic target for PTSD
Determining whether your environment is safe or dangerous, is crucial for survival. Intriguingly, despite this vital importance, the neural mechanisms underlying safety have only recently been unravelled. Likhtik et al. (2014) uncovered a safety signalling circuit in the brain between the medial prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, by using a series of keen experiments. This circuit might be a fruitful novel therapeutic target in PTSD, in which patients suffer from overgeneralized fear, which may well be caused by a deficit in safety signal processing.
